Longleng Town Council promotes rainwater harvesting

DIMAPUR — The Longleng Town Council (LTC) on Monday organised an awareness programme on rainwater harvesting and water conservation under the nationwide Jal Sanchay Jal Bhagidari (JSJB) campaign on the theme, "Catch the Rain."

Held at the DC's conference hall, the programme aimed to raise awareness about the importance of rainwater harvesting, water conservation and community participation in sustainable water management, a DIPR report stated.

Speaking as the resource person, Junior Engineer, PHED, L Baukham Phom highlighted the importance of rainwater harvesting, particularly in water-stressed districts such as Longleng, where a large section of the population depends on rainwater and spring sources for its water needs.

He outlined the major causes of water scarcity in the district, including hilltop settlements, drying springs, depletion of water sources during the winter season, climate variability and inadequate rainwater storage facilities.

He stressed that addressing these challenges requires collective efforts and sustainable water management practices.

Baukham urged the public to harvest and conserve rainwater during the monsoon season and to maintain local water bodies to ensure year-round water availability.

He also emphasised the need to increase forest cover, prevent deforestation and adopt conservation measures such as spring-shed management and the construction of check dams to improve groundwater recharge and protect water sources.

He further encouraged citizens to actively contribute to water conservation by installing rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, keeping drains clean, planting trees, protecting local water bodies and practising responsible water use.

Community participation, he said, is essential for ensuring long-term water security and sustainable development.
