Nagaland Excise Department registered 79 offences and seized 3,480 bottles and cans of IMFL and beer during an intensified July enforcement drive across Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland.
DIMAPUR — The Excise Department has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing prohibition laws and curbing the illegal trade in liquor and narcotic substances, stating that it has maintained a sustained enforcement drive across Nagaland for more than three decades despite facing constraints in manpower, logistics and infrastructure.
According to a press release, the department has been at the forefront of implementing prohibition laws and combating illicit liquor and drug trafficking since the early 1990s.
From 1990 to date, it has registered several lakh offence reports involving the seizure of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), illicit liquor, narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
The department said it detects an average of 13 to 15 offences every working day, translating to more than 4,000 to 5,000 cases annually.
It said the figures reflect a consistent, proactive and intelligence-based enforcement strategy rather than sporadic action.
During July 2026, the three Dimapur-based units—the Narcotic Cell, Mobile Squad and District Excise—conducted an intensified enforcement drive across Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts.
The operation resulted in the registration of 79 offences and the seizure of around 3,480 bottles and cans of assorted IMFL and beer of various brands and sizes. The department also realised INR 2.16 lakh in penalties, which has been deposited into the government treasury through the prescribed procedure.
It stated that the seized liquor has been confiscated and is being kept in the department's malkhana pending destruction after approval from the competent destruction board or committee.

The department said the coordinated drive covered multiple locations, including restaurants, bars and other commercial establishments suspected of violating prohibition laws.
It added that the operation led to the closure of some outlets and acted as a deterrent to other violators, although some establishments may still be operating clandestinely.
Warning those involved in the illegal sale and distribution of liquor, the department said it would continue conducting thorough inspections and surprise raids to detect unlawful possession, sale and distribution of liquor in the coming days.
Reiterating its resolve to strengthen enforcement mechanisms, the department appealed for continued public cooperation to enhance the effectiveness of its prohibition enforcement efforts.
