DIMAPUR — Civil society organisations (CSOs) in Longleng district have demanded immediate restoration of the deteriorating Changtongya–Longleng two-lane road and sought a detailed status report on the stalled construction project within a week.
A press release on Monday informed that the demands were made during a consultative meeting of the district's CSOs convened under the leadership of Phom Peoples' Council (PPC) to discuss issues concerning the welfare and development of Longleng district.
Addressing the meeting, PPC president YB Angam Phom expressed concern over the prolonged non-maintenance of the two-lane road project from Changtongya to Longleng, stating that its deteriorating condition has caused severe hardship to commuters and adversely affected transportation, economic activities and the district's overall development.
The meeting urged the authorities concerned to undertake immediate restoration and maintenance of the road within this week to ensure public safety and convenience. It also resolved to pursue the matter with the relevant government departments and agencies until appropriate action is taken.

The CSOs stated that they had submitted several representations and held multiple meetings with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the district administration and the executing company, but alleged that no concrete action had been taken to address issues relating to the road construction project.
They further demanded that the authorities concerned submit a comprehensive inspection report on the current condition of the road and the progress of the construction work to the CSOs' office within one week.
According to the CSOs, the report should explain the present condition of the road, the reasons for the delay and the proposed roadmap for completing the project and maintaining the road.
The organisations cautioned that if the authorities fail to submit the report and initiate immediate corrective measures within the stipulated period, they would be held solely responsible for any future course of action the CSOs may undertake in the interest of the people of Longleng district.
