ICAR–KVK Peren hosts webinar promoting sandalwood and agarwood through agroforestry for tribal farmers’ income growth.

DIMAPUR — The ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren organised a post-budget virtual webinar on the theme “Promotion of sandalwood and agarwood through agroforestry” at the Women Conference Hall in Jalukie town on March 6.
The webinar, telecast live from Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, was attended by farmers from different parts of Peren district. The programme was chaired by SMS (Fruit Science) of KVK Peren, Dr. Prashant Kalal, according to an update.
Principal Scientist and Head of KVK Peren, Dr. K.L. Meena, delivered the welcome address and highlighted the objectives of the webinar. He said the programme aimed to uplift the socio-economic status of tribal farmers through the cultivation of high-value crops such as sandalwood and agarwood.
Prior to the live session, Dr. Prashant Kalal delivered a lecture on the cultivation of sandalwood and agarwood and encouraged farmers to adopt these commercial crops through various policy interventions and agroforestry practices.

During the programme, farmers also watched a live address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who encouraged farmers across the country to adopt agri-entrepreneurship, strengthen processing systems, and improve supply chains to achieve the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
The webinar also featured live presentations covering eight subthemes, including promotion of livestock and fisheries, high-value agriculture, promotion of Indian cashew and cocoa, sandalwood cultivation, rejuvenation of low-yielding orchards, Bharat VISTAAR, and Self-Help Entrepreneur Marts.
Following the webinar, SMS (Agronomy) of KVK Peren, Dr. Akshay Ujjwal, spoke on agri-entrepreneurship and startup opportunities aimed at improving farmers’ income and economic stability.
The programme concluded with a farmer-scientist interaction session, during which KVK Peren scientists addressed various challenges faced by farmers. Participants actively engaged in discussions on crop protection, integrated farming systems, and good agricultural practices.
