The by-election race in 28 Koridang Assembly Constituency is taking shape as parties weigh candidates following the demise of former legislator Imkong L Imchen.

KOHIMA — The race for the by-election to 28 Koridang Assembly Constituency in Mokokchung district is beginning to take shape, with potential candidates gradually emerging as political groups and community bodies weigh their choices.
The by-election was necessitated following the demise of former legislator Imkong L Imchen on November 11, 2025. Under electoral rules, the vacant seat must be filled within six months.
Imchatoba Imchen finds backing
In a press communiqué issued on Thursday, the Yimlang Citizens’ Forum of Mangmetong village announced its unanimous support for Imchatoba Imchen as the consensus candidate for the upcoming by-election.
According to the forum, the decision was taken during a general public meeting held at Yimkong Salang, where participants held detailed discussions before extending their full backing to Imchatoba.

Imchatoba currently serves as president of the NPF Central Youth Wing and is a former president of the Naga Students' Federation (NSF).
In what the forum described as a significant move towards unity, Imsumongba—who had also been considering contesting from the same village—officially withdrew from the race on March 5 and extended his support to Imchatoba.
BJP, Congress yet to finalise
Meanwhile, sources from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nagaland unit told Eastern Mirror that the party is likely to recommend Daochier I Imchen, the heir of the late legislator, as its candidate.
However, an official announcement from the party is yet to be made.
Meanwhile, S Supongmeren Jamir, President of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), said that the party has constituted a search committee, but the final decision will depend on the grassroots recommendation.
Electorate profile
According to official electoral data, the total number of electors in the 28 Koridang constituency stands at 22,390. This includes 22,266 general electors and 124 service electors.
Among the general electors, 11,253 are male and 11,013 are female voters.
Of the 124 service electors, 123 are male and one is female. There are no registered third-gender electors in the constituency.
