DIMAPUR — Aggrieved landowners along the Kohima–Jessami road in Phek district have issued an ultimatum to the deputy commissioner of Phek, demanding immediate intervention for the release of pending land damage compensation.
A press release issued by the landowners on Friday stated that they had previously called on the district administration to urgently write to the authorities concerned and ensure the disbursement of compensation for land acquired under the national highway project.
“Despite repeated appeals and reminders from affected individuals, there has been no concrete step taken by the administration or the executing agencies to disburse the rightful compensation to the landowners whose land was acquired for the national project,” it stated.

In light of the prolonged delay, the landowners have resolved to impose a total blockade of the Kohima–Jessami National Highway if the compensation is not released on or before July 15.
Terming the move “unfortunate but inevitable,” the landowners blamed the inaction of the authorities—particularly the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL)—for forcing them to consider agitation.
They further stated that any inconvenience caused by the proposed blockade would be the sole responsibility of the authorities who have failed to act in time, despite having sufficient opportunity to do so.
“We once again urge the deputy commissioner, Phek, to act swiftly and ensure that the due compensation is released immediately to avert the proposed agitation,” it added.
