Kohima Forest Division observes World Ozone Day with school students and community leaders at Kitsubozou.
DIMAPUR — The Kohima Forest Division, in collaboration with the Divisional Management Unit Kohima, Nagaland Forest Management Project, and the Forest and Biodiversity Management in the Himalaya (Nagaland) Project Kohima, observed World Ozone Day 2026 at Panchayat Hall, Kitsubozou, on Wednesday.
According to an update, the event was held under the Village Adoption Committee 2025-26 for the 14th Southern Angami-I Assembly Constituency, with participation from students of Government Primary School, Kitsubozou.
Giving a brief note on World Ozone Day, LDA-cum-Computer Assistant of Kohima Forest Division Kevin Heikha highlighted the harmful ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun, which is absorbed by the ozone layer before reaching the earth’s surface.
He stated that ozone layer depletion has been largely associated with increasing human activities and the release of ozone-depleting substances, which adversely affect plants, animals, marine ecosystems, and environmental balance. He urged students to develop environmental responsibility by reducing waste and using electricity judiciously.

Ajabu, Headmistress of Government Primary School, Kitsubozou, expressed that students and teachers gained valuable knowledge regarding the importance of preserving the ozone layer.
Kitsubozou Council Chairman Dzieseneilie Sachü reminded participants that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and called for meaningful steps to protect the planet for future generations. School Management Committee Chairman Aziebu Theyo noted that simple measures such as planting trees, conserving energy, and adopting eco-friendly practices make meaningful contributions to environmental protection.
During the programme, an educational video on the formation and protective role of the ozone layer was screened, and students presented a special song.
Around 60 participants, including students, teachers, Kitsubozou council members, SMC members, the range forest officer of Kohima Range, and departmental staff, took part in the programme.
