Karbi folklorist Terang’s statue unveiled in Diphu

Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council CEM Tuliram Ronghang unveiled a statue of renowned Karbi folklorist and writer Ru Bonglong Terang, on Sunday.

DIPHU — Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, unveiled a statue of renowned Karbi folklorist, writer, and cultural reformer, Ru Bonglong Terang, at the Karbi Lammet Amei (KLA) - Karbi Literary Office on Sunday.


Ru Bonglong Terang was instrumental in preserving and promoting Karbi culture through his writings, earning him notable recognitions, including the Karbi Lamkuru Sarpo Award in 1973 from Karbi Lammet Amei.


Prior to unveiling the statue, CEM Ronghang paid respects to Ru Bonglong Terang's portrait, seeking blessings. The ceremony, led by KLA General Secretary Liladhar Teron, commenced with a traditional Karbi prayer and offerings of rice beer, betel nut, and leaves to the statue by a Kurusar.

In his address, Ronghang emphasised the importance of remembering Ru Bonglong Terang's contributions to Karbi society.


“The youth should follow his legacy,” he said.


He also commended young writers like On Teron for carrying forward Ru Bonglong Terang's literary legacy.

“If you know languages, you should not forget your own mother tongue...I've visited many foreign countries, and my observation is that those people prioritise their mother tongue; likewise, we must preserve our own mother tongue,” he added.


Karbi Lammet Amei General Secretary Liladhar Teron expressed gratitude to the CEM for his contribution and support in erecting the statue of Terang.


Among others, the programme was attended by Diphu MLA Bidyasing Engleng, Padma Shree Dhaneswar Engti and various other dignitaries.
