IMPHAL — The nine-day-long celebration of the Kang (Rath Yatra) festival commenced on Friday with traditional rituals and rites, conducted with restraint in view of the prevailing situation in Manipur.

The main highlight of the festival, Kang Chingba—the ceremonial pulling of the grand chariot—was held at the Shree Shree Govindajee Temple premises in Imphal East under tight security arrangements. Devotees offered flowers and fruits to Shree Shree Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra as part of the sacred observances.

Despite ongoing unrest in the state since May 3, 2023, a significant number of devotees, dressed in traditional attire, gathered at the palace gate and temple grounds, braving the summer heat to take part in the festival.

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla visited the temple on the occasion, offering prayers for peace, prosperity, and the well-being of the people. He also extended greetings to the citizens of Manipur.

Assembly Speaker Th. Satyabrata, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, and MLA Yumnam Khemchand were among the dignitaries who attended the festival.

In a message, Speaker Satyabrata noted, “Kang is more than just a religious festival—it is a reflection of our shared culture and unity. As the sacred chariot of Lord Jagannath rolls through the streets, we are reminded of the deep bonds that connect our communities.”

Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also extended greetings on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “As the sacred chariot of Lord Jagannath rolls through the streets, may it carry blessings of peace, prosperity, and harmony for all.”

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President K. Meghachandra and other leaders also conveyed their wishes. Reports of Kang Chingba being celebrated in various localities, including the ISKCON Mandir in Imphal, were also received.
