DIMAPUR — A joint inspection of National Highway (NH) 702 between Changtongya and Longleng on Thursday has revealed serious road hazards and structural deficiencies, prompting urgent calls for remedial action.
According to a press release issued by the Phom Students' Conference (PSC), the inspection team comprised administrative officers Nukshimatong, SDO (Civil), Changtongya (accompanied by Dobashis) and Meyazungba Jamir, SDO (Civil), Longleng.
Representatives from the Langpangkong Tzukong Mungdang, Langpangkong Range Road Coordination Committee, Phom Peoples’ Council, Phomla Hoichem, PSC, and officials from National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and NSC also participated in the exercise.
Between Changtongya and Dikhu (Chainage 0+400 to 6+507), multiple landslide-prone areas were observed along the stretch, particularly at 0+400–0+720, 1+600, and 3+876–4+000. These landslides have resulted in blocked drainage and unsafe conditions. The landslide site at 1+600 was noted as especially dangerous due to the risk of falling rocks.
Several culverts were either blocked or found to be poorly constructed using Hume pipes, including at chainages 0+700, 1+004, 2+548, 3+876–4+000, and 6+507.

Issues with retaining walls and drainage structures were found, especially at 1+900–1+020 and 3+876–4+000, with immediate attention recommended for the site at 1+900–1+020. A section of road at 4+900 showed signs of sinking, aggravated by poor drainage and ongoing landslide activity.
Between Dikhu and Alayung village (Chainage 8+403 to 17+400), persistent drainage blockages caused by landslides were noted at multiple points, including 8+403, 8+600, 8+800, 9+675, 12+698, and 17+400. Overflowing water on the road surface was reported at 8+403. Blocked culverts were also identified at 9+675, 12+698, and 17+400.
Following the inspection, NHIDCL and NSC officials assured the public that all blockages and immediate concerns will be addressed within two weeks. Regular joint inspections will be carried out to ensure the quality and pace of work. Any damaged road surfacing (DBM) will be restored and blacktopped after the monsoon season.
The inspection team emphasised the importance of prompt and sustained action to mitigate the risks and ensure the long-term usability of NH702, which remains a vital lifeline for both the people of Longleng and Changtongya.
