DIMAPUR — The Longleng District Sports Council held the induction programme of the Phom Sports Association and its federating units at the VCC and VDB hall in Longleng on May 16.
According to a DIPR report, MLA A Pongshi Phom attended the occasion as the special guest.
In his keynote address, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the Longleng District Sports Council, W Manpai Phom, stated that the Longleng district is set to strengthen its sports framework with the formation of four Area Sports Associations under the Longleng District Sports Association.
He stated that the district has lagged behind others in sports activities due to the long absence of a dedicated apex body and discipline-specific organisations for promotion and technical support.

After several rounds of discussions with members of the Longleng District Sports Association and in coordination with various apex bodies, it was decided to establish a structured association for better functioning and coordination.
Accordingly, four federating Area Sports Associations have been constituted: Shakshi Area Sports Association (ASA), Longleng ASA, Yongyah ASA, and Tamlu ASA, with their executives and organisational structures put in place.
He stated that this is the first time such bodies are being formed under the guidance of the Longleng District Sports Association and that all sporting activities and achievements in the district will function under its banner.
MLA Pongshi, in his address, stated that the formation of the Phom Sports Association has been the genuine desire of the Phom people for a very long time. He congratulated the DC, under whose leadership the formation of the Phom Sports Association became a reality.
He also congratulated all the leaders and officers who made immense contributions and sacrifices for the association and extended his best wishes to all the office-bearers of the Phom Sports Association and its federating units.
He said that the formation of the association was initiated with the due realisation of the importance of sports, and he stressed the need to build a strong foundation at the grassroots level.
Exhorting that the progress and survival of the association depend on sincere efforts, he urged the office bearers to devote their time and energy for the association to grow. Asserting that jealousy, bias, and favouritism are discouraging factors plaguing the healthy growth and progress of the people, he appealed to do away with these challenges while inducting office bearers or players.
He also advised the youths to give utmost importance to physical health and a disciplined lifestyle, abstaining from substance abuse. He further called upon the gathering to stand united and make a strong resolution with a commitment to achieve the greater aims and objectives of the association.
SDO (Civil) Longleng, P Pukha Lam, presented the report of the nomination committee.
The new office bearers of the Phom Sports Association were also felicitated during the programme. Short speeches were delivered by the new President of the Phom Sports Association and the President of PPC, YB Angam.
