DIMAPUR — Incessant rainfall in the early hours of July 5 has triggered severe flooding across Dimapur and Niuland districts, disrupting daily life, damaging property, forcing school closures, and displacing residents in several areas.
In Dimapur, the sudden and intense downpour led to flash floods in various localities, including LRC Colony, the Nagarjan Road stretch, Vilhume Colony, Netaji Colony, the Super Market bus/sumo stand, Aoyimti village, and Purana Bazar B village. Roads were submerged, houses flooded, and schools forced to shut down.
In Netaji Colony, floodwaters rose to knee level, submerging homes and SM High School, where water entered classrooms and flooded the entire compound. The school remained closed on Saturday and is expected to reopen on Monday.
The caretaker, who resides on the premises, reported that the water had begun to recede slowly. Roads leading to the school were also flooded due to overflowing drains.
Vilhume Colony faced severe inundation from clogged drains, with water entering multiple homes and some areas experiencing waist-deep flooding. The Super Market area and Nagarjan Road stretch were completely submerged, disrupting transport and commercial activity.
LRC Colony, another low-lying area, saw around six homes affected. Residents were seen draining water manually and cleaning their premises. In a lighter moment amidst the chaos, locals were spotted catching fish using nets in the flooded streets.

Poor drainage infrastructure remains a major concern, as both rainwater and sewage flowed at the same level, delaying the recession of floodwaters.
Aoyimti village also experienced flooding, with water entering several homes, and the local ground was completely submerged. In Purana Bazar B village, many households were also affected.
Meanwhile, in Niuland district, the district administration issued a press release stating that the heavy rainfall on the night of July 4 and early July 5 had caused rivers and streams to swell, resulting in extensive flooding.
Over 70 villages were affected, with residential houses submerged and large-scale damage reported to paddy fields, fishery ponds, plantations, farms, and roads. Thousands of farmers have been displaced, with their livelihoods severely impacted.
A major landslide on the road connecting S Hetoyi and Ghokuto villages has rendered the route impassable. A portion of the road has been washed away, cutting off Ghokuto village from all essential services, including access to medical aid, food, and water.
The Niuland district administration is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating rescue and relief efforts. However, continued rainfall is hampering access and delaying emergency operations.
