KIPHIRE — As part of a two-day training programme on the value addition of horticultural crops, 50 students from Loyola Higher Secondary School and Government Higher Secondary School, Kiphire, attended the training at the Office of the District Horticulture Officer (DHO), Kiphire, on April 5.
Speaking during the occasion as a special guest, Lipichem, District Project Officer, Department of Land Resources, said that horticulture is the nerve centre of human civilisation and acknowledged the Government of India and the Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Medziphema, for the transfer of horticultural technology and its intervention in the remotest areas of the country.
He noted that all the participants have been exposed to various experiences in the value addition of horticultural crops, which would change the landscape of the district economy and the country as a whole.
He said that horticulture is as old as the Bible, dating back to the Garden of Eden, and emphasised the importance of paying special attention to the locally available crops of the district.

The resource persons, led by senior scientist and head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kiphire, Dr. Bordoloi, along with Dr. Manjunath, subject matter specialist (SMS) in Horticulture, Dr. Sunil, SMS in Agriculture, Dr. Karibasappa, SMS in Plant Pathology, and Alok Dube, SMS in Agricultural Extension, presented PowerPoint on various aspects of horticulture and its importance in value addition.
Meanwhile, Esther Francis from the Linsi Self-Help Group provided a hands-on demonstration and training on the value addition of important horticultural crops to the participants.
According to the District Horticulture Officer, Kiphire, 100 participants benefitted from the two-day training programme, sponsored by the Central Institute of Horticulture, Medziphema, which was held in the aspirational district of Kiphire.
