Heavy vehicles face restrictions at Peducha as road sinking and debris falls disrupt traffic along Nagaland’s Kohima-Mao highway
DIMAPUR — Kohima district administration has restricted the movement of heavy commercial vehicles bound for Manipur and Jakhama sub-division at Peducha, citing continuing debris falls and sinking of the road at the Phesama Sinking Zone along the Kohima-Mao section of National Highway-2.
The restriction, issued by the district magistrate on Tuesday, covers the affected stretch between Chainage Km 191+840 and Km 192+100, where intermittent debris falls from adjoining hill slopes and continued road sinking have severely compromised road safety and disrupted normal traffic flow.
Under the order, heavy commercial vehicles bound for Manipur or Jakhama sub-division will be held at Peducha under Sechu Zubza sub-division and released periodically depending on restoration progress and road conditions at the affected stretch.
Kohima Traffic Police have been directed to deploy personnel at Peducha and other strategic locations to enforce and regulate the restriction.
Manipur-bound heavy vehicles have been advised to use the alternate route through Peren district, in accordance with existing heavy vehicle regulations imposed by the Peren district authorities.

In emergencies, the Kohima-Jessami and Chakhabama-Zunheboto roads may also be used, the order stated.
Light motor vehicles, meanwhile, will continue to be diverted through the Phesama-Kisama/Kigwema route, passing through Rhododendron Resort, for two-way traffic.
The alternate route is being maintained by the executive engineer, Roads & Buildings, South Division.
The restoration work is to include continuous debris clearance and road stabilisation, with the administration emphasising the need to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.
Pedestrians have also been strictly advised against crossing the affected landslide section due to the continuing risk.
