- DIPHU — Five
members of a family, including four minors, were hospitalised on Friday after
reportedly consuming wild mushrooms in Jengkha Chengong village, West Karbi
Anglong district, Assam.
- The affected individuals initially began showing symptoms of
severe vomiting and diarrhoea shortly after eating mushroom curry prepared from
fungi foraged from a nearby sugarcane field. They were first taken to Kheroni
Model Hospital but were later referred to Diphu Medical College & Hospital
for further treatment.

- The victims have been identified as Basapi Ronghangpi (70),
Homsera Englengpi (30), Rumir Timungpi (7), Longbir Timung (8), and Rukasen
Timung (5).
- While foraging for wild mushrooms are a common practice in
both rural and urban parts of Karbi Anglong, incidents of poisoning occur when
inedible or toxic varieties are mistaken for edible ones. In some cases, such
misidentification has proven fatal.
