DIMAPUR — The Food Safety Administration, Zunheboto, under the Mokokchung Zone, conducted an awareness camp on safe and fortified food, repurposing used cooking oil, good manufacturing practices, and sensitisation for food business operators (FBOs) at the Chief Medical Officer's (CMO) conference hall in Zunheboto on Monday.
The participating FBOs comprised wholesalers, retailers, restaurant and hotel owners, manufacturers, Anganwadi staff, and self-help groups (SHGs), stated an update.
The responsibilities of FBOs regarding FSSAI registration and licensing of their respective firms were highlighted by Samuel Zehol, designated officer of the Food Safety Administration, Mokokchung Zone. Mandatory compliances regarding general hygiene and sanitation, as well as possessing medical fitness certificates for employees at the manufacturing level, were also outlined by the concerned officer.

He stressed the importance of fortified food for improving and ensuring public health. He noted that fortification is a safe and cost-effective way to improve nutrition without changing eating habits.
He stated that repurposing used cooking oil is an initiative taken up by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). He highlighted the hazards of reusing cooking oil multiple times, which can produce harmful chemicals leading to serious health problems.
The Food Safety on Wheels team from Mokokchung performed demonstrations on the detection of common adulterants in food items for the FBOs.
