  • He exhorted the children present to prioritise their studies and to work hard to become contributing members of society, good citizens, and generous individuals in life.

  • The free distribution of umbrellas was held as part of the Bumblebee Society’s ‘Reading Programme’ to encourage children to attend school regularly and with dignity, even during the rainy season.

  • Earlier in the programme, Vikhor Tepa from the Bumblebee Society said that the society, a local non-profit organisation dedicated to disability awareness and inclusive education, is making meaningful strides in bridging learning gaps among children from marginalised communities.

  • The ‘Reading Programme’ has worked with children from marginalised communities and those with disabilities since 2011. The programme is currently operating in two government schools—Government Middle School New Minister’s Hill and Government High School Forest Colony—with over 120 students enrolled. It focuses on strengthening foundational literacy for students in classes 1 to 4, including phonics lessons.

  • It was mentioned that 95% of these children are domestic helpers. The programme is tailored to suit their learning pace and background, using interactive, child-friendly methods to build confidence and foundational literacy skills.

  • The assistant headmistress of the school, Swedeseno Zao, thanked the MLA for his benevolence and shared concern for the children of the school and their welfare in her short speech.

  • The MLA also visited the classrooms and interacted with the students and teaching staff of the school.
