Orientation on fire safety and relief camp planning underway

DIMAPUR — A two-day orientation programme on fire safety preparedness and relief camp planning for Dimapur city, organised by Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) under Home Department in collaboration with the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU), got underway at the office of Development Association of Nagaland (DAN) in Chekiye village on Wednesday.
An update from DNSU stated that a total of 25 dedicated volunteers along with DNSU executives are undergoing intensive training aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and response mechanisms in Dimapur.
The programme began with registration followed by a welcome and introductory session led by Vekuzo Lohe, project associate of NSDMA. It was followed by a brief speech delivered by R Michael Yanthan, vice president of DNSU, who has appreciated NSDMA for initiating a timely and important programme. He highlighted the significance of unity and inclusiveness, noting that the participating volunteers come from diverse tribes and communities. Emphasising that disasters do not discriminate based on tribe or ethnicity, he stated that preparedness and response must be a collective responsibility of all.

A comprehensive overview of the project on fire safety preparedness and relief camp planning was presented by Dr. Johnny Ruangmei, joint chief executive officer of NSDMA, who highlighted the objectives and expected outcomes of the initiative. He also conducted a team-building activity, effectively demonstrating that the true strength of a group lies in collective support.
It stated that participants were oriented on key concepts such as hazard, risk and vulnerability assessment, providing a foundational understanding essential for disaster management.
The session on basic concept of disaster management was conducted by Rendemo Shitio, NSDMA assistant manager of Response and Communication, further enriching the participants with practical knowledge on response and communication strategies.
In the afternoon session, discussions focused on non-structural mitigation measures for urban flood risk in Nagaland, emphasising preventive approaches in urban settings. It was followed by a transect walk theory and practical session conducted by Thejangulie Zao, NSDMA assistant manager of Projects and Resources, offering hands-on learning experiences for field assessment.
The day concluded with a session on relief camp management and operation conducted by L Jonjibemo Odyuo, NSDMA assistant manager of Relief, Recovery and Mitigation, who equipped the participants with essential skills required for effective camp coordination during emergencies.
It mentioned that the training aims to build a pool of informed and capable volunteers, who can assist authorities and communities during disasters, ensuring timely response and better management of crisis situations in Dimapur.
The second day of the programme would continue with further practical sessions and capacity-building activities.
Meanwhile, DNSU has expressed gratitude to NSDMA and resource persons for their valuable contributions towards empowering the youth with life-saving knowledge and skills.
