DIMAPUR — With an objective to spread awareness and promote mental well-being among students and the community, the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), Zunheboto, observed ‘Suicide Prevention Week’ from September 10 to the 16th across various educational institutions in the district.


An update from the office of the chief medical officer (CMO), Zunheboto, stated that the week-long campaign was carried out at Merry Hill School, Sunbeam School, St. Anthony School, Government High School South Point East, The Ark Coaching Centre and Corner Stone Higher Secondary School.


It stated that resource persons and mental health professionals conducted interactive sessions that addressed a range of critical issues surrounding suicide prevention. It added that the sessions highlighted suicide rates in India and the urgent need for preventive measures, while also addressing the myths and facts about suicide in order to dispel stigma and misconceptions.

Discussions were focused on the risk factors that might lead to suicidal ideation, including mental health conditions, substance use and stressful life circumstances as well as the protective factors such as family support, community networks and access to timely mental healthcare which play a vital role in safeguarding individuals.


It stated that participants were sensitised on warning signs that could aid in early detection and intervention. Healthcare professionals also emphasised the do’s and don’ts when supporting someone experiencing suicidal thoughts and shared five practical steps that could be taken to assist an individual in crisis.


The sessions also introduced the participants to the National Mental Health Helpline – 14416 (Tele-MANAS), a toll-free round-the-clock service available for immediate counseling and support.


It stated that the observance of Suicide Prevention Week served as a reminder of the collective responsibility to build empathy, encourage open conversations around mental health and promote timely help-seeking behaviour.


Meanwhile, the DMHP Zunheboto has reaffirmed its commitment to continue raising awareness and strengthening mental health services throughout the district.
