DIMAPUR — Only one confirmed case of dengue has been reported in Dimapur so far this year with the case emerging from Diphupar-A area in June, according to Peter Sangtam, District Vector Borne Disease Consultant (DVBDC), Dimapur.

As part of the Health department’s ongoing vector control efforts, guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata)—known for feeding on mosquito larvae—are being distributed and released in areas identified as mosquito breeding grounds. A dedicated fishery has also been established at the Chief Medical Officer’s (CMO) establishment in Dimapur to support this initiative.

Sangtam informed that residents who detect mosquito larvae in their locality may collect guppy fish from the Urban Malaria Scheme office under CMO Dimapur. A fishery has also been set up at the CMO Dimapur premises to support this effort.

To prevent potential outbreaks, domestic breeder-checker teams are actively inspecting households for mosquito larvae and raising awareness about prevention and control methods. These inspections form part of a wider effort that includes educational campaigns on mosquito-borne diseases.

Last month, the department marked Anti-Malaria Day with awareness programmes on both malaria and dengue. This month is being observed as Anti-Dengue Month, during which health teams are visiting high-risk areas to conduct awareness drives and engage with residents on preventive practices, he added.
