Dimapur Police restricts firecracker sales and use, sets festival timings, bans hazardous crackers and warns of legal action against violators
DIMAPUR — Dimapur Police has restricted the sale and use of firecrackers to approved green varieties and prescribed time limits for bursting them during festivals across Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts.
In an advisory issued on Wednesday, Commissioner of Police Aotula T Imchen said fireworks could be burst between 8 pm and 10 pm on Diwali and other festivals, including Gurpurab. On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, the permitted window is from 11.55 pm to 12.30 am.
The advisory prohibits firecrackers containing banned or hazardous chemicals, including barium salts, lead, mercury, arsenic and antimony. Joined firecrackers, including series crackers or laris, are also prohibited, as are fireworks exceeding the prescribed noise limits.

Only licensed traders may sell permitted green crackers, subject to applicable regulations and safety standards. The police warned against the sale of counterfeit products, including those bearing fake QR codes, and warned that violations could lead to seizure of stock and cancellation of licences.
The advisory also prohibits fireworks within 100 metres of hospitals, healthcare centres, educational institutions, courts and religious places, designated as silence zones.
E-commerce platforms and online marketplaces have been asked not to process orders for or deliver firecrackers in the three districts. The police cautioned that violations would invite legal action under applicable laws.
Residents have been encouraged to opt for community celebrations at designated open grounds to minimise firecracker use in congested areas.
