DNSU urges education authorities to extend summer vacation due to heat, waterlogging, and power outages affecting schools.

DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has appealed to the state’s education authorities to extend the upcoming summer break for government schools, citing concerns over extreme heat, water-logging, and frequent power outages that are affecting the learning environment across the city.
According to the academic calendar for 2025, the summer vacation is currently scheduled from July 14 to the 28th. However, in a press release issued on Monday, the DNSU called for an extension of the break to a minimum of 20 days, or preferably until the fourth week of August, in view of the persistent high temperatures and related challenges.
The student union pointed out that July and August typically represent the peak of summer in Dimapur, and that the ongoing weather conditions pose health and logistical difficulties for both students and teachers. “Apart from the intense summer heat, issues like waterlogging and occasional flooding have made the situation worse,” the release stated.

It further highlighted the strain caused by frequent power cuts and the absence of backup power systems in many schools, which, according to the DNSU, significantly hampers the teaching-learning process during the summer peak.
The DNSU proposed an alternative adjustment to the academic calendar: shortening the winter break instead, given Dimapur’s milder winter temperatures. The union suggested that a longer teaching period during winter could help compensate for the extended summer break without adversely affecting the academic syllabus.
Calling for a prompt and practical response, the union expressed hope that the concerned education department would seriously consider its request and adopt measures that prioritise the well-being of students and teachers.
