DIMAPUR — Alleging that years of neglect have deprived students of vital academic and vocational opportunities, the Phom Students’ Conference (PSC) has taken exception to the prolonged non-functioning of key educational institutions in Longleng district.
In a press release issued on Monday, the PSC cited its recent three-day inspection and stated that three major institutions—the Polytechnic Institute, Industrial Training Institute (ITI), and District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Longleng—remain completely idle and locked, despite having been constructed several years ago.
According to the PSC, the buildings have been left to decay, with climbers and weeds overtaking the premises and causing significant structural damage to walls, corridors, and roofs.
Besides the infrastructural decay, no staff appointments have been made, no equipment has been provided, and there are no indications of academic activities being initiated.
Condemning what it termed as “persistent neglect,” the PSC maintained that the situation not only wastes public resources but also hampers the overall development of the region.
It issued a set of demands to the authorities, including immediate clearing of vegetation and full repair of all damaged infrastructure; a time-bound plan to operationalise all three institutions; appointment of qualified staff in all departments; provision of necessary equipment, study materials, and operational funding; and establishment of a monitoring mechanism to ensure accountability and progress.
The PSC warned that if these demands are not addressed within a reasonable timeframe, it will be forced to launch democratic agitation to protect the rights and future of the student community.
