DIMAPUR — The Office of the Executive Engineer, Electrical Division Dimapur, has issued a clarification on the concerns raised by the Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF), Dimapur District GBs Association (DDGBA), and GB Union Dimapur Sadar (GBUDS) over “forced prepaid meter installation.”
In a press release, the EE office stated that under the centrally-sponsored Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), the Department of Power is actively engaged in infrastructural augmentation works in the odd/wee hours, which include installation of additional distribution transformers, reconductoring of HT lines and LT cabling replacement works to improve the power supply and provide quality service to the consumers.
The office also stated that smart meters have been installed in almost all government offices and institutions, industrial and commercial establishments.

“In accordance with the mandate from the Government of India and subsequent notification from the state government, there is no option to choose between pre-paid and post-paid meters; compliance with government directives is required.
“The implementation of smart pre-paid metering is not a forced action but a necessary step towards achieving self-sustainability in the power sector and providing better services, including 24/7 power supply,” it maintained.
“Adopting this technology is essential to eliminate human errors and intervention.”
It also pointed out that citizens have a fundamental right to electricity as an essential service, but the delivery methodology is determined by the government and the Department of Power, as per the law.
Further, the EE office emphasised that citizens are responsible for abiding by the law and paying honestly for services to support the power sector's sustainability, while the department implements reforms.
“The department once again humbly request the esteemed consumers to co-operate and collaborate with the government to achieve the objectives of this scheme,” it added.
