The DUCCF has raised concerns over the alleged unsafe discharge of air rifles and pellet guns in Dimapur's residential areas, urging stronger monitoring and enforcement.
DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Urban Colony Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) has expressed concern over the alleged unsanctioned and dangerous discharge of air rifles and pellet guns in urban residential neighbourhoods, stating that such incidents pose a threat to public safety, property and peaceful coexistence.
The federation's concern follows a recent incident in which an air rifle pellet reportedly shattered the window pane of a residential house in one locality.
Although no one was injured, the pellet struck near an occupied living space, highlighting the potential risks associated with firing air weapons in densely populated areas.
In a press release, the DUCCF stated that while air rifles and air pistols are commonly marketed for recreational target shooting or pest control, their discharge in residential areas can result in serious injuries, particularly to the eyes, as well as damage to property and vehicles.
“Discharging any projectile weapon in close proximity to homes, children and vehicles is irresponsible and dangerous,” the federation stated, urging residents and colony councils to remain vigilant and prevent such incidents before they result in serious injury.

United Colony Council in Dimapur bars traders from joining unions
In view of the safety concerns, the DUCCF urged colony councils and municipal authorities to strengthen monitoring and take measures to curb the random discharge of air weapons in public and residential spaces.
It stated that neighbourhood councils are stepping up community monitoring to identify and report individuals found discharging air guns, air rifles or firearm-like weapons within residential areas.
The federation also urged the authorities to review gun licences and the use of air weapons, while calling for closer coordination between colony councils and law enforcement agencies to enforce existing arms regulations, verify firearm-licensing compliance and clarify restrictions concerning high-powered air weapons.
Residents have been urged to report unauthorised shooting incidents, stray pellets or the brandishing of air weapons to the authorities or law enforcement agencies.
According to the DUCCF, representatives of colony councils are expected to meet with law enforcement officials in the coming days to establish clear reporting channels and discuss enforcement protocols concerning the misuse of air weapons in residential areas.
The federation stated that it remains committed to promoting public safety, maintaining civic standards and preserving the remaining flora and fauna while ensuring safe and liveable neighbourhoods in Dimapur city.
