DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has raised concerns over incidents of extortion, kidnapping, physical assault and intimidation targeting the business community, and called for stronger and coordinated action by the administration and security agencies.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the chamber stated that in the past few months alone, members of the business community have faced extortion demands, kidnapping, assault at gunpoint and summons by various groups.
Dimapurians continue to experience a rise in theft, arson and intimidation despite ongoing efforts by security personnel, it stated.

The DCCI appreciated the deputy commissioner of Dimapur for enforcing the Home department’s directive dated May 19, 2022, which ordered cessation of illegal taxation on vehicles across the state by any entity or individuals. It maintained that checking of commercial vehicles on highways falls under the purview of the Home department’s order.
The chamber pointed out that despite the directive, certain government departments had flouted the order and were reminded only after public outcry, calling the situation an embarrassment for the state government.
While acknowledging the efforts of the commissioner of police, Dimapur, and security personnel in combating crime, the DCCI urged the authorities to ensure swift and decisive measures to curb criminal and anti-social activities.
Referring to the recent survey for installation of CCTV cameras in major intersections and markets—a joint initiative of the state government, Police department and civil society organisations—the chamber said implementation of the project would enhance security and public safety in Dimapur.
The DCCI also appealed to the Dimapur District Planning & Development Board not to recommend registration of unions or business welfare associations related to the business community to the Home department.
Stating that Dimapur has been overwhelmed by multiple unions and welfare associations, it cited instances of three unions operating on the same street, all registered by the Home department on the recommendation of the DPDB.
According to the chamber, such overlapping structures have created a hostile and strained business environment.
