DIMAPUR — A conclave on Zeliangrong socio-political issues and strategic framing discourse was held in New Delhi on May 30 to discuss Zeliangrong political issues and the progress of ongoing political negotiations with the Government of India.
According to an update, the programme was organised by the Zeliangrong Welfare Association Delhi (ZWAD) in New Delhi.
The conclave was attended by Zeliangrong intellectuals, senior leaders, bureaucrats, student representatives, church leaders, concerned citizens residing in Delhi, members of the Zeliangrong Statehood Working Committee (ZSWC), and leaders of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF).
The conclave explored various possibilities and strategic approaches aimed at evolving a viable framework for the early settlement of the long-standing and unresolved political aspirations of the Zeliangrong people. Following extensive deliberations and a careful examination of all relevant considerations, the conclave made several observations and remarks.
It was urged that an effective mechanism be instituted to synchronise and coordinate the efforts of all stakeholders towards the realisation of the shared aspirations and collective objectives of the Zeliangrong people. The participants stressed the need for organising more such conclaves, consultations, and strategic discussions to foster greater unity, understanding, and collective action.
It resolved to organise a democratic rally and demonstration to assert and reaffirm the rights of the Zeliangrong people and to press for the fulfilment of their political aspirations. It was further agreed that the rally and demonstration be held across the Zeliangrong homeland and in Delhi, as and when decided by the concerned organisation or committee, commencing from 2026.
The conclave underlined the urgent need to mobilise and harness the active participation of all civil society organisations (CSOs), scholars, bureaucrats, intellectuals, and concerned individuals so that the collective efforts of the community may contribute meaningfully towards the realisation of the aspirations and objectives of the Zeliangrong people.
An appeal was made to all elected representatives of the Zeliangrong people, including Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) and Members of Autonomous Councils (MACs), across the states of Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland to extend their endorsement, full cooperation, and support to this people’s movement.
In this regard, the ZSWC has been entrusted with the responsibility of obtaining written endorsements from the elected representatives as an initial step towards demonstrating their support, commitment, and solidarity with the collective cause.
It was opined that if the demand for a Zeliangrong homeland or state is not immediately accommodated in accordance with the mandate entrusted by the Zeliangrong people to the Zeliangrong People's Convention (ZPC), such an MoS must explicitly acknowledge or mention that the arrangement is interim in nature. It should begin as a preparatory or transitional step towards the realisation of a full-fledged Zeliangrong homeland or statehood.
It was further resolved that an expert committee be constituted to prepare a comprehensive draft framework and formulate a clear roadmap for finalising the memorandum of settlement to be entered with the Government of India at the earliest.
The house further entrusted the ZSWC with the responsibility of pursuing, coordinating, and advancing the decisions and recommendations that emerged from the deliberations.
