DIMAPUR — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday formally launched the digitisation of old manual birth and death certificates, marking a major step towards complete online management of vital records in Nagaland.
According to a DIPR update, the launch was held in the chief minister’s official chamber in Kohima in the presence of Secretary for Economics & Statistics Akunu S Meyase, Director Economics & Statistics Neidilhou Keditsu, and other departmental officials.
Speaking on the occasion, Rio said that the initiative would streamline service delivery, ensure accurate and reliable data, improve citizens’ access to essential documents and support evidence-based public policy decisions. He also commended the department of Economics & Statistics for the initiative and urged citizens to ensure timely registration of births and deaths.

The move comes in the backdrop of directives of the Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI), Ministry of Home Affairs, under which Nagaland introduced online registration of births and deaths in April 2022. The digitisation of old manual certificates is aimed at integrating legacy records into the online system.
The department announced that issuance of manual certificates will soon be discontinued, with the state transitioning to 100% online registration and digitisation.
It was clarified that only genuine certificates issued by registrars of births and deaths, and details available in official records, will be digitised to ensure authenticity and future accessibility.
The department has appealed to the public to avail the facility through the ORGI portal (dc.crsorgi.gov.in) to help build a comprehensive and secure database of vital records for the state.
