Nagaland's 2025 meteorological report warns of increasing climate variability, extreme weather events and rising risks to infrastructure and agriculture
DIMAPUR — Nagaland is witnessing increasingly erratic weather patterns and a rising frequency of extreme weather events, posing growing risks to agriculture, infrastructure and public safety, according to the Meteorological Report of Nagaland 2025 released by the Directorate of Soil and Water Conservation.
The report, shared through the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), comes as the state grapples with widespread monsoon-related devastation, including landslides, flash floods and road disruptions across several districts.
According to the report, rainfall distribution continues to vary significantly across Nagaland, underscoring the state's diverse climatic conditions. Among the meteorological observatories, Sechü (in Kohima) recorded the highest annual rainfall at 2,901.2 mm, while Meluri received the lowest annual rainfall.

The report also identified Dimapur as the hottest station, with temperatures reaching 34°C during June and July, while the state's higher-altitude districts recorded comparatively cooler temperatures throughout the year.
It stated that the southwest monsoon remained the principal source of rainfall, with July to September receiving the highest precipitation across most districts. Bhandari in Wokha recorded 1,507.2 mm of rainfall over 99 rainy days, with September emerging as its wettest month.
Historical observations indicate that rainfall patterns have fluctuated considerably over the past decade, reflecting increasing climate variability across the state.
The report stated that these changing weather patterns have far-reaching implications for agriculture, water resources, infrastructure planning and disaster management. It added that reliable meteorological information enables farmers to better plan cropping seasons, helps authorities prepare for floods and landslides, and supports long-term water conservation and resource management.

Highlighting the growing impact of climate-related disasters, the report highlighted that during 2024-25, incidents of windstorms, cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides resulted in casualties, damaged roads, disrupted water supply systems, affected livestock and poultry, and caused damage to government schools and irrigation infrastructure.
The report observed that such events demonstrate the increasing vulnerability of public infrastructure and rural livelihoods to extreme weather conditions.
It stressed that strengthening disaster preparedness, expanding early warning systems, investing in climate-resilient infrastructure and promoting sustainable natural resource management would be critical as extreme weather events become more frequent.
According to the report, understanding local climate trends and maintaining reliable meteorological data will be essential for informed planning, environmental conservation and building resilience against the impacts of climate change.
