DIMAPUR — Multiple organisations have condemned the alleged assault on Wekupe Therie, President of the Western Chakhesang Youth Organisation (WCYO) and Advisor to the Western Naga Youth Front, at Naga United village, Chümoukedima, on May 2.
ZYOD: The Zeliang Youth Organisation Dimapur (ZYOD) expressed its outrage at the “premeditated assault” inflicted upon Therie.
The organisation stated that the incident constitutes a clear and deliberate attempt to commit culpable homicide, if not attempted murder, executed in a manner that reflects total contempt for law, order, and human life.
According to the ZYOD, the sequence of events reveals that what began as an inconsequential and accidental contact between the side-view mirrors of two vehicles was wilfully escalated by the accused into a violent and criminal episode.
"Despite being prima facie at fault, the perpetrators, acting with malafide intent, exploited the victim’s lawful and civil conduct when he stopped his vehicle to assess the situation. In blatant disregard of his repeated appeals for peaceful resolution, a group of approximately five assailants launched a coordinated and vicious attack upon Mr. Therie, causing grievous injuries and extensive damage to his vehicle," it stated.

The ZYOD demanded the swift identification, arrest, and interrogation of all individuals involved and called for them to be booked under relevant sections of the law. It also sought a time-bound investigation and the filing of a chargesheet to ensure an expeditious trial, the imposition of maximum penalties upon conviction, and full and adequate compensation to the victim for the physical, mental, and material damages suffered.
ALTC: The Ao Lanur Telongjem Chümoukedima (ALTC) also expressed its condemnation against the alleged assault.
The reported act of physical violence and damage caused to his vehicle is deeply disturbing and unacceptable in a civilised society, it stated.
The ALTC noted that such cowardly acts of violence not only threaten the safety and dignity of individuals but also undermine communal harmony, peace, and the spirit of brotherhood among the Naga communities. Differences and misunderstandings should never be resolved through violence and intimidation, it added.
The organisation appealed to the concerned authorities to conduct a fair, impartial, and time-bound investigation so that all individuals involved are identified and brought to justice at the earliest.
CSU: The Chakhesang Students' Union (CSU) denounced the violent assault, stating that such cowardly acts of violence are utterly unacceptable and have no place in a civilised society.
The union viewed the incident with grave concern and strongly denounced the growing culture of intimidation, aggression, and lawlessness being displayed through such actions.
"The brutal attack is a serious threat to public peace and communal harmony. Resorting to violence and taking the law into one's own hands only breeds fear, unrest, and instability within the society," it stated.
The CSU demanded an immediate and impartial investigation into the matter and urged the concerned authorities to take strict action against all perpetrators, adding that justice must not be delayed.
WCSU: The Western Chakhesang Students' Union (WCSU) condemned the assault on Therie, noting that he was “brutally and savagely” beaten without the slightest provocation, and his vehicle was deliberately damaged by a mob of unknown miscreants.
It stated that it is extremely concerning that a minor and accidental vehicular contact escalated into a brutal attack by a large group of individuals.
"Mr. Therie has consistently served our people with integrity and dedication, working selflessly to uplift the welfare of the Chakhesang Community and Nagas at large. This incident is a blatant assault on leadership, the rule of law and Naga Brotherhood, a shameful betrayal that demands zero mercy," the WCSU stated.
The union demanded an immediate and thorough investigation by the concerned authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are identified, apprehended, and brought to justice without delay or prejudice.
