DIMAPUR — The Chang Union Chümoukedima (CUC) celebrated its silver jubilee on the theme ‘Progress with diligence’ at K4 venue, Chümoukedima town, on Thursday.

Addressing the event as special guest, Minister of PHED and Cooperation, Jacob Zhimomi, reflected on the journey of the Naga people who left their native villages to settle in the western sector of Nagaland — Dimapur.

The minister noted that erstwhile Dimapur district has now been bifurcated into three districts — Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland — where every Naga tribe resides today.

Citing historical accounts, Zhimomi mentioned that the Sema and Angami were among the first to settle in this region, paving the way for other tribes and added that a century ago, had they not ventured into this sector, Nagas might still have been confined to the hills.

It was through God’s guidance that they came here, and their decision has since proved to be a blessing for all Nagas,” he said.

The minister stressed that in these three districts, every Naga is an equal stakeholder and must learn to co-exist harmoniously.

On the issue of development deficit in the ENPO region, he clarified it is not political but economic in nature.

He remarked that Nagaland belongs to everyone, and collectively they must make it more beautiful. Socially, economically, culturally and Nagas share similarities in traditions and culture and these bonds should be strengthened as they move forward together.

The minister further cautioned against narrow tribal mindsets, stating that if Nagas continue to prioritise tribe over collective identity, society will remain fragmented. Instead, Zhimomi urged the present generation to take steps toward unity and cited that when Nagas go outside the state, they identify themselves simply as ‘Naga’ and not by tribe. This same spirit of identity must also be practiced within Nagaland, he added.

On the occasion, the minister also released the jubilee souvenir, while the jubilee blessing was pronounced by Yanger, Pastor of Chang Baptist Church, Naga United.

During the celebration, short speeches was delivered by O Mongko GB, founding president of CUC; Nungsang Jamir, president of Naga Tribal Union Chümoukedima Town; Razouvotuo Chatsu, chairman of Chümoukedima Village Council, R Chemriba Sangtam, president of Eastern Naga People Union Chümoukedima;  Bendang, president of Chang Union Dimapur; and Hongsa, chairman of Hakuchang colony, Shokhuvi.

Earlier, CUC president Changsangjum delivered the welcome address. The union’s vice president Koma K Chang proposed vote of thanks.
