DIMAPUR — The Chakhroma Students’ Union (CSU) has urged the additional deputy commissioner of Medziphema to initiate an immediate enquiry into an alleged chemical spillage in the Dzümha River that has resulted in the death of fish and other aquatic species.
In a representation to the ADC, the union stated that chemical substances were reportedly discharged into the river by certain individuals, causing unnatural discolouration, a foul odour, and large numbers of dead fish along various stretches.
The incident, it warned, has disturbed the ecological balance of the river and posed serious health and livelihood risks to communities relying on it for domestic use, agriculture and fishing.

The CSU requested the administration to conduct water quality tests to determine the extent of contamination and assess potential hazards to downstream users.
It further appealed for strict action against those responsible under relevant environmental laws, along with measures to prevent further pollution and restore the river’s ecological health.
The union also called for strengthened monitoring and awareness mechanisms to ensure such incidents do not recur.
