Chakhesang Attire Regulatory Board issues regulations on the use of GI-tagged traditional attires and motifs
DIMAPUR — The Chakhesang community has brought out rules and regulations governing the usage of Chakhesang traditional attires and ornaments, which were adopted on May 20, 2025.
According to a press release issued by the Chakhesang Attire Regulatory Board (CARB) on Wednesday, the regulations became necessary due to instances where traditional attires were misused, leading to the misrepresentation of community traditions and customs.
The board stated that the preservation and maintenance of rich cultural heritage remains vital for the identity of any community, noting that every traditional attire and motif conveys the story of their way of life and traditions.
The board further pointed out that Chakhesang attires and ornaments have been registered under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. Consequently, misuse, cultural appropriation, and defamation of traditional attires will be viewed seriously and can lead to legal action.

The regulations cover six key areas, starting with colour and hue integrity, under which the original colours, hues, and patterns of all attires and ornaments must be maintained. Under motif preservation, respective motifs must be strictly adhered to, with the board directing that shawl motifs cannot be used on skirt designs, and vice versa.
Regarding gender and status rules, attires and ornaments designated specifically for men or women, as well as those reserved as merit wears, must be worn strictly according to tradition. In terms of age-appropriate usage, traditional age-group distinctions must be respected, meaning married men are prohibited from wearing attires meant for young boys, and vice versa.
Under event restrictions, unauthorised designs cannot be worn or used at any national or international event without explicit approval from CARB.
