  • DIMAPUR — In a bid to promote climate resilience and enhance urban greenery in heat-stressed areas, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has launched the 'Women for Trees' campaign under the AMRUT Mitra initiative.

  • The campaign is being carried out in collaboration with DAY-NULM and is designed as a women-led plantation drive, stated a DIPR report.

  • Phase-I of the campaign from May 21 to the 23rd would be site visit. It stated that over 50,000 women Self Help Group (SHG) would take part in exposure visits to identified plantation sites including water treatment plants (WTP), water bodies, ULB-owned parks and other government lands.

  • The goal was to familiarise SHG members with the locations where plantation efforts are planned and help them understand on-going urban greening strategies. The visits would also serve as orientation sessions.

  • Phase II of the campaign would involve active plantation work by women SHG in the same areas identified earlier. Starting on June 5, which coincides with World Environment Day, the drive would continue through the monsoon season until August 31.

  • MoHUA has urged all states, UT and ULB to follow standard IEC guidelines for branding, outreach and documentation.

  • It stated that participating SHG from Nagaland would visit plantation sites in Mokokchung on May 21, Phek on May 22 and Dimapur, Kiphire, Kohima, Longleng, Peren, Tuensang, Wokha and Zunheboto on May 23.

  • Report stated that the campaign marked a significant step towards combining environmental sustainability with women's empowerment in urban India.
