Central team from DASD and CPCRI visits Peren to study arecanut cultivation feasibility and proposes Ngwalwa area as an Arecanut Hub.

DIMAPUR — A central team led by Babulal Meena, deputy director, Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development (DASD), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Calicut, Kerala, visited Peren district to conduct an arecanut cultivation feasibility study on December 16.
The team included Dr. AK Sit, senior scientist, Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), West Bengal, and Leichombam S Singh, scientist, CPCRI, Guwahati.
According to a DIPR report, they visited the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) declared Ngwalwa Arecanut Village and carried out field visits also to Heningkunglwa village.

Following the visits, a stakeholders’ meeting was held at the Village Council Hall, Ngwalwa, chaired by Sizin Renttah, EAC Ngwalwa.
The central team informed that they would recommend to the ministry the introduction of the latest production technologies, the establishment of nurseries for quality planting materials, the development of necessary infrastructure, and the creation of marketing linkages with South India.
The team proposed to develop the Ngwalwa area, including Heningkunglwa, Ngwalwa, Gaili Namdi, Gaili, and Punglwa villages, as an ‘Arecanut Hub’. Additionally, intercropping of arecanut with spices such as black pepper and cocoa was suggested to enhance farmers’ income and promote sustainable cultivation practices.
