DIMAPUR — The Can Youth, in partnership with Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and in collaboration with the Office of the ADC Medziphema and Medziphema Town Council, conducted five-day Community First Responder (CFR) training, which culminated with a mock drill at Medziphema local ground on August 2.

In a press release, Can Youth stated that the CFR training, conducted from July 29 to August 2, focused on equipping individuals with essential life-saving skills and enhancing community preparedness to respond effectively during emergencies and disasters.

The final day witnessed active public engagement through a live demonstration of emergency response techniques.

Zhove Lohe, secretary and director of Can Youth, chaired the event and called upon the local residents and passersby to witness the mock drill.

In his address, he highlighted the significance of the training and gave a brief overview of Can Youth’s vision and mission, emphasising the role of informed and capable communities in disaster risk reduction.

Jenpu Rhakho Rongmei, founder and chief functionary of Can Youth, delivered key insights into rescue operations and the importance of community readiness. “Disasters often strike suddenly and without warning,” he said, “which is why preparedness at the individual and community level is essential. The skills being demonstrated today can help save lives-so observe, learn, and share.”

ADC Medziphema, P James Swu, the special guest for the event, commended the initiative and encouraged the public to actively take part in such learning.

“A good leader is someone who shares valuable knowledge. Do not keep what you’ve learned to yourself-spread it, teach it, and empower your community,” he stated, urging the participants to extend the knowledge beyond the training.

The mock drill was led by Nuyielu Nyekha, project manager of Can Youth. Trainees demonstrated various emergency rescue procedures, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), safe lifting techniques, and responses to real-life scenarios such as choking, fainting, and injuries.

Each step was explained in detail, enabling attendees to understand the practical application of the training. Certificates of participation and appreciation were distributed to all trainees and local councillors.

The event concluded with the discussion on the way forward, including plans to extend community-based training and promote disaster preparedness across Medziphema areas.
