DIMAPUR — NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) has announced that defender Buanthanglun Samte has signed a new three-year contract, extending his stay at the club until the end of the 2027-28 season.
The 25-year-old left-back has been a key figure under head coach Juan Pedro Benali since arriving at the club at the start of the 2023-24 season, making 40 appearances for the Highlanders.
According to an update, Samte has impressed with his dynamic runs down the left flank and his ability to create opportunities, establishing himself as a vital component of the team’s attack and defence.

During the 2024-25 Indian Super League season, Samte ranked fifth in the league for most chances created, with an impressive tally of 43 chances in 22 games — the only defender to feature among the top 10 and one of just two Indian players on the list, alongside teammate and India international Jithin MS (41 chances).
“I am delighted to extend my stay at NorthEast United FC for three more years. I would like to thank Head Coach Juan Pedro Benali, the coaching staff, and the management for believing in me. I’m excited to continue growing as a player and a person with this amazing club,” Samte said, reflecting on his new contract.
Head coach Juan Pedro Benali praised Samte’s impact, saying, “Samte is a fantastic player who brings both defensive solidity and attacking drive to our side.
Watching him develop into one of the best left-backs in the country has been a pleasure, and I’m thrilled we’ll see even more of him in the coming years.”
“Offering Buanthanglun a contract extension was an easy decision. His growth over the past two years has been outstanding, and he remains an integral part of our squad. We are confident that under Juan Pedro Benali’s guidance, Samte will continue to flourish,” Mandar Tamhane, CEO, NorthEast United FC, said.
NorthEast United FC will begin their pre-season in Guwahati on July 13 as they prepare for their Durand Cup title defence.
