IMPHAL — Cultural extravaganza marked the inaugural day of the 4th Edition of State-Level Barak Festival 2025, which commenced at Zeilipou in Senapati district, Manipur, on Saturday.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla along with his wife visited the various Morungs set up at the venue, showcasing rich traditions and cultural heritage of various ethnic groups in the district.
Addressing the gathering, Bhalla said the festival symbolised shared identity, unity, and enduring bond between communities and the Barak River. He highlighted Senapati’s rich natural landscapes, cultural diversity, and immense tourism potential, adding that events such as the Barak Festival plays a vital role in showcasing local traditions while promoting sustainable tourism and economic growth.

President of India Droupadi Murmu was deeply impressed by the natural beauty of Senapati, he said, noting that its strategic location along the National Highway-2 positions the district as a gateway to Manipur and an emerging destination for eco and experiential tourism.
He also informed that Tourist Circuit Development projects of approximately INR 8.46 crore, supported by the North Eastern Council, are underway in several villages to strengthen tourism infrastructure and improve local livelihoods.
Emphasising environmental responsibility, the governor lauded the recent Barak River Cleanliness Drive and urged for continued efforts to protect the river and forests. He also encouraged the youth to uphold cultural heritage and lead conservation initiatives for a harmonious and sustainable future.
The governor also unveiled the 4th State Level Barak Festival 2025 Monolith and witnessed traditional stone pulling, traditional cuisines, and customary blowing of horn, besides vibrant cultural dance performances showcasing diverse traditions.
MLA Losii Dikho, Naga People’s Organisation (NPO) President Peter Kuba, Former Deputy Speaker) K Raina, senior officials of civil administration police and the Assam Rifles; and other dignitaries also attended the inaugural function.
The Barak Festival is a cultural extravaganza showcasing the traditions and identity of the five Naga tribes of Senapati district--Mao, Maram, Poumai Naga, Thangal, and Zeliangrong--along with other communities. This year’s theme is “Heritage in Harmony”.
