IMPHAL — A Bailey bridge over the Tuivai river in Manipur’s Churachandpur district collapsed on Thursday evening, disrupting traffic along a key stretch of National Highway-02 and affecting supply routes to the district.
According to officials, the bridge, located between Sinzawl and Khuanggin villages under the Thanlon area, gave way while two trucks loaded with cement were crossing it. No casualties were reported.
The route serves as an important supply line from Silchar to Churachandpur via Mizoram, and the collapse has severely impacted the movement of goods and vehicles along the corridor.
In a press release issued on Friday, the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur confirmed that traffic movement along the affected stretch has been disrupted. It stated that the district administration has directed the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) to restore the bridge on a war footing.

The NHIDCL has initiated immediate measures for procurement and installation of a replacement Bailey bridge, with restoration work being taken up on priority to ensure early resumption of normal traffic movement.
In the interim, vehicular traffic has been diverted via the Sinzawl–Dialkhai–Churachandpur route along NH-02. Authorities have advised commuters to follow the alternative route and adhere to traffic advisories.
The district administration said all necessary steps are being taken to restore connectivity at the earliest and sought public cooperation for smooth traffic management and safety.
Meanwhile, Manipur has been experiencing light to moderate rainfall in several parts of the state since April 26, with showers reported in multiple areas, including Imphal, on Friday.
