DIMAPUR — Awareness programmes on menstrual hygiene and women empowerment were held in Noklak, Niuland, and Longleng districts on September 8 and 9 under the initiative of the district administrations and the respective District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) through Sankalp.
An awareness programme was conducted at the KGBV Hostel Noklak on September 8.
According to a DIPR report, Medical Officer of District Hospital Noklak, Dr. Chongnya, speaking on the occasion as the resource person, emphasised the biological significance of menstruation, highlighting its role in a girl's physical and reproductive development, typically beginning around the age of 12–13.

He explained the phases of the menstrual cycle, including ovulation and hormonal changes, and taught simple methods to track cycles, helping attendees recognise patterns and anticipate their periods.
Dr. Chongnya focused on proper menstrual hygiene practices, including changing sanitary pads every 4–6 hours, washing hands before and after handling menstrual products, wearing clean and breathable innerwear, and safe disposal of used pads.
He also discussed the risks of poor hygiene, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), and shared preventive measures. Practical tips were offered to manage menstrual pain, including warm compresses, light physical activity, and staying hydrated. The importance of seeking medical supervision for pain relief was also stressed.
The event was coordinated by District Mission Coordinator (DMC), DHEW Noklak, Vein M, who outlined key components of Mission Shakti, including initiatives like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, and other support services aimed at empowering women and girls.
An awareness session was held at Platinum College, Nihokhu Village, in Niuland as part of the ongoing 10-day special awareness campaign under Sankalp on Tuesday.
The session centred on empowering women through higher education, vocational training, and skill development initiatives, aiming to equip young women with tools for success in their personal and professional lives.
Resource person Kelengunuo Solo, EAC, delivered a talk on women empowerment, encouraging students to cultivate leadership qualities and sharpen their decision-making skills, particularly in the context of career opportunities and workplace dynamics.
In Longleng, an awareness programme on gender sensitisation, menstrual hygiene, and inclusivity was conducted at Yingli College on September 8.
On the occasion, resource person Phungla Phom, DMC DHEW Longleng, spoke on the importance of the aforementioned topics. She also highlighted the schemes related to women and the girl child. She encouraged the participants to be agents for women empowerment.
The session focused on understanding menstruation, proper hygiene practices, use and disposal of sanitary products, and promoting confidence among adolescent girls. It was followed by an interactive session and distribution of dignity kits.
