DC Tuensang urges collective responsibility to safeguard children

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR), in collaboration with the District Child Protection Unit, Tuensang, organised a one-day awareness programme on child rights and child protection at Chang Khuli Setshang Hall, Tuensang, on Tuesday.


According to a DIPR report, Deputy Commissioner of Tuensang, Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa, in her address, exhorted the gathering on child rights and protection and pointed out that every child is special and that it is the responsibility of all to protect and ensure due care for their progress without discrimination or abuse.


She stated that unreported family abuse cases are inherent in all communities and should be eradicated at the earliest. Rutsa appealed to elders, public leaders, NGOs, students’ organisations, and parents to adhere to child rights and child protection to the fullest in the district.


Guest resource speakers included Legal Consultant, NSCPCR, Lichani Murry; member NSCPCR, Akumla Longchari; and member NSCPCR, Aying Wangsha.

They spoke on the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, highlighting adoption rules, understanding and strengthening the POCSO Act towards a safer future for children, and the rights of children with regard to education vis-à-vis the Right to Education, with emphasis on child labour.


The keynote address was delivered by Secretary of Social Welfare and Secretary, NSCPCR, Yongchingkumla. Project Coordinator, Hongen Thangty Chang, chaired the programme.


A brief report on child-related cases in the district was presented by DCPO Tuensang, Yangtriba Sangtam. An open discussion on child rights and child protection was also held with the participants to enhance the importance of the awareness programme.
