DIMAPUR — New fare rates for auto rickshaws across Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts have been approved and will come into effect from 2026.
The revised fare chart was finalised during a recent meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Dimapur, held at the deputy commissioner’s office.
This was announced by president of the Dimapur District Auto Drivers’ Union (DDADU), Tito Yepthomi, during a press conference at the DDADU office, Naga Shopping Arcade, Dimapur, on Thursday.

The DDADU president appealed to both the public and auto drivers to strictly follow the revised fare structure once it is implemented.
Yepthomi stated that the approved fare chart will be widely distributed to the public, including through collaboration with print media, to ensure that every household is made aware of the new rates.
Responding to queries on the ongoing issue of autos charging excessive fares, he urged all auto drivers to refrain from overcharging passengers, while minor variation of INR 10 to INR 20 may be acceptable in certain situations.
However, he cautioned that unreasonable fare hikes often lead to disputes and must be avoided.
He also appealed to Naga auto drivers not to demand extra charges or exhibit poor behaviour, and encouraged Naga passengers to support local drivers as a way of strengthening the community.
On mechanism for lodging complaints, Yepthomi informed that Dimapur has 12 designated parking in-charges, with their contact numbers displayed at the respective parking points.
In cases of excessive overcharging, passengers have been advised to take note of the vehicle number and the driver’s ID card details for necessary action.
On safety compliance, he highlighted that seminars for auto drivers are organised two to three times a year, in collaboration with government agencies.
However, he observed that many Nagas lease their autos to non-local drivers, which sometimes results in non-compliance with rules and safety guidelines.
He further noted that some non-local drivers, particularly those without uniforms or ID cards, are often responsible for violating safety norms, and added that newly arrived workers sometimes become auto drivers after only a few days of riding along, leading to further lapses.
Regarding disciplinary action, the DDADU president stated that auto drivers found guilty of overcharging will have their ID cards seized and may face suspension ranging from one week to a month.
He also emphasised the importance of wearing the prescribed auto driver uniform. For Naga drivers unable to afford the uniform, he assured assistance to help them comply with the requirement.
