This was informed by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

It may be noted that under the earlier Swadesh Darshan scheme, two projects were sanctioned through the Tribal Circuit in 2015-16 and 2016-17: Development of Tribal Circuit at Peren-Kohima-Wokha (INR 97.36 crore), and Development of Mokokchung-Tuensang-Mon (INR 98.14 crore).
Shekhawat informed that while the development of tourism infrastructure is primarily undertaken by state governments and Union territory administrations, the Ministry of Tourism supports these efforts through schemes such as Swadesh Darshan (SD), Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD 2.0), the CBDD sub-scheme, and Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI).
These schemes provide financial assistance for developing tourism experiences, amenities and infrastructure, including at tribal destinations in the north-eastern region.
He also informed that the ministry has launched the Development of Homestays in Tribal Areas sub-scheme under Swadesh Darshan for the financial year 2025-26, as part of the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (PM-JUGA).
The initiative aims to develop 1,000 homestays in tribal regions to tap tourism potential and create alternative livelihood opportunities by supporting the development and renovation of tribal homestays and community infrastructure, including in the Northeast.
