DIMAPUR — Demonstrating steadfast commitment to environmental conservation and community welfare, Assam Rifles organised tree plantation drives at New Akhegwo village in Meluri district and Pungro in Kiphire district, on Monday.
The plantation drives were conducted as part of the national campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,’ according to a defence release.
The plantation drive in New Akhegwo witnessed enthusiastic participation of around 60–65 villagers, including elderly citizens, women, and children.
Similarly, in Pungro, people across all age groups actively engaged in the plantation of indigenous saplings, specially selected to suit the local climate and environment.
“This green initiative aimed to promote environmental sustainability, enhance biodiversity, and foster a collective responsibility toward a greener future. It also symbolised a heartfelt tribute to one’s mother and Mother Earth.
“The drives further strengthened the bond between the Assam Rifles and the local populace, reinforcing the force’s role not only as ‘Sentinels of the North East’ but also as ‘Friends of the North East,’” the release added.
