DIMAPUR — The Angami Students’ Union (ASU) has submitted a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima urging immediate and extraordinary intervention following the road collapse along National Highway-2 near Phesama village, which occurred on June 1.
While acknowledging the initial response by the district administration and state government, the ASU expressed concern over what it described as “lackadaisical workmanship” by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), under whose supervision the highway project falls.
“The current state of affected stretch poses not only a severe threat to the lives of commuters but also reflects a larger lapse in accountability and quality control,” the student union stated.

The road disruption, according to ASU, has severely impacted school and college goers who are now facing difficulty in attending classes and examinations due to the lack of viable transportation. The situation has also disrupted both intra- and inter-state movement, affecting essential services, livelihoods, and daily mobility for many residents, it said.
In this connection, the union has urged the Deputy Commissioner to expedite the restoration of the damaged portion of the highway with strict monitoring of construction quality and adherence to timelines. It further appealed for the provision of a safe and functional alternate route to ensure uninterrupted movement for the public.
ASU also requested temporary transportation support for students and daily commuters during the period of disruption, as well as financial and logistical assistance for those most affected, including students and transport workers.
In addition, the union urged the administration to initiate long-term preventive measures and conduct a comprehensive audit of NHIDCL’s infrastructure works in the region to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Assuring full cooperation, the ASU reiterated its commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at restoring normalcy and safeguarding public well-being in light of the ongoing crisis.
