DIMAPUR — The inauguration of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) water supply scheme at Vihokhu village, Niuland district, on Tuesday marked a significant milestone in the districts rural water supply development.
Sanctioned in the year 2022-23, the water supply scheme sources from a natural spring at Atu Ghoki, located approximately 6.5 km from the main reservoir in the village, an update stated.
Advisor for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Zhaleo Rio, inaugurated the JJM scheme, in the presence of Deputy Commissioner of Niuland, Sara S Jamir; Executive Engineer (PHED, Nirie Nisa; department officials, NDPP 5 Ghaspani 2 Assembly Constituency executives; and village leaders and elders.

In his address, Zhaleo thanked the central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for spearheading the Jal Jeevan Mission, which has not only provided water supply but also ensured clean drinking water and tap connections to every household in the villages.
Highlighting the benefits of clean drinking water, including improved physical health and complexion, he urged the villagers to protect and sustain these vital water sources for future generations.
The advisor also acknowledged the government's efforts to provide safe drinking water through initiatives like gravity-fed systems and deep bore wells. However, he expressed concern that villagers often neglect proper care and maintenance after the projects are handed over to them.
Emphasising the importance of water conservation, he urged villagers to prevent water wastage, citing its preciousness and the potential for global conflicts over this resource. Zhaleo concluded by thanking minister-in-charge Jacob Zhimomi for initiating the project and expressed hope for continued collaboration.
A technical report was presented by Kumugha K Shohe, SDO PHED, who highlighted that Vihokhu is the only village in Kuhuboto sub-division with a gravity-fed water source. He also credited the successful implementation of the project to the active cooperation and support of the villagers, particularly the WATSAN committee.
Chairman of WATSAN committee Kakishe Yepthomi, delivered the vote of thanks.
