DIMAPUR — Chang community organisations on Thursday alleged that the accused in the Lengrijan minor sexual assault case was practising law in Dimapur and had previously held positions in student organisations (ANCSU and NSF).
Addressing a press conference at the residence of the treasurer of Chang Union Dimapur (CUD), representatives of the CUD, Changsao Thangjam Setshang Dimapur (CTSD) and Chang Students’ Union Dimapur (CSUD) once again condemned the alleged assault and appealed to authorities to ensure a fair investigation.
CSUD vice president I Chejing Chang asserted that regardless of how influential a person may be, justice must prevail.

He also appealed to the media and the public to protect the identity of the minor, refrain from speculation and avoid victim-blaming.
CUD president Lanuchuba Chang said that the organisations first received information about the incident on May 24 and immediately approached the Women Police Station, where they learned that the victim was under the care of Child Helpline and Child Welfare Committee.
According to him, union representatives later met officials concerned, who informed them that the victim was stable though traumatised.
He added that the organisations subsequently lodged an FIR seeking justice for the survivor, whom they described as a bona fide member of the Chang community.
CTSD vice president Bendangmenla Chang expressed concern over the incident and stressed the need for stronger safeguards for women and children.
“No mother wants such a thing to happen to any child. We strongly condemn this act and seek justice,” she said.
Meanwhile, CUD joint secretary Stephen Chang claimed that the accused, identified as Watimeren aka O Wati, had reportedly obtained anticipatory bail.
He informed that a representation had already been submitted to the competent authority seeking cancellation of the bail.
Lanuchuba Chang further said that the minor had reportedly been staying at the accused person’s residence for educational purposes for nearly two years.
When asked whether the matter could end in compromise, the CUD president maintained that the case was already under legal process and there would be no negotiation from their side.
The organisations also appealed to citizens to collectively condemn crimes against minors and support efforts to secure justice for the survivor.
