It is high time human rights of each and every individual in the planet be accorded equal sanctity and protection.
Sir,
This is in response to the news report titled "South African jurist of Indian origin Navi Pillay wins Nobel Peace Prize" (October 10).
No kudos is enough for the Norwegian Nobel Committee for conferring the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize upon South African human rights lawyer Navi Pillay (born to a family of Tamil origin) for her efforts to uphold a system of international law that is increasingly under attack and for being instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.
Rightly has she warned that vested interests are taking us to a world in which power, rather than law, determines whose suffering matters. And that there lies no requirement of "courage" to speak the truth; rather an impartial decision-making will do provided law gets interpreted by looking at all the facts.
It is high time human rights of each and every individual in the planet be accorded equal sanctity and protection. No wonder why Pillay reminds all heads of State that they are under legal obligation to protect human rights and refrain from war.
Will the hate-mongers draw any lesson from the 85-year-old lady who stood up for Nelson Mandela and depended him and others who confronted Apartheid!
Thanking You, Yours etc,
KChatterjee, Kolkata
