The 5th Dr. Imkongliba Ao Memorial Volleyball Trophy begins in Dimapur, promoting unity and showcasing Nagaland’s young sports talent.

DIMAPUR — The 5th All Nagaland Dr. Imkongliba Ao Memorial Volleyball Trophy began on Wednesday at the DDSC Stadium in Dimapur, organised by the Japukong Youth Organisation (JYO). Chairman of the Dimapur Municipal Council, Hukheto Yepthomi, was the inaugural guest.
In his address, Yepthomi lauded the JYO for hosting the event and highlighted its role in fostering unity among the diverse communities of Nagaland. He said that unity remains fundamental to the state’s progress and encouraged efforts to strengthen bonds across different groups.
“At the heart of this event is the legacy of Dr. Imkongliba Ao, a figure whose place in Nagaland history cannot be overstated. Ao was a pioneer and a beacon of hope during one of the most challenging periods of the state’s journey. He stood for peace, unity and progress,” Yepthomi said, noting that dedicating the tournament in Ao’s memory serves to unite young people while upholding the values he championed.

He added that sports have historically served as a catalyst for social change and resilience. Highlighting the talent among Nagaland’s youth, he stressed the importance of tournaments such as the Dr. Imkongliba Ao Memorial Trophy in uncovering and nurturing potential.
“Sports break down barriers of language, tribe and background. In Nagaland, there is an infectious enthusiasm for sports, and the talent is evident,” he said. Yepthomi further emphasised that investing in sports is important, and events like this encourage young people to view sports not only as competition but also as a pathway to discipline and personal growth.
In the first match of the tournament, MH-10, winners of the 3rd Dr. Imkongliba Ao Memorial Volleyball Trophy and runners-up of the 4th edition, defeated Street Boys Club Pangti.
A total of nine teams are competing in the tournament, including MH-10, Street Boys Club Pangti, Blind Spikers Akuluto VK, Vision Club Niuland, Changtongya Volleyball Association, Chienino Brothers Kiruphema, United Changki, Southern Angami Sports Association, and Shikaho Memorial Club Akuluto.
