KOHIMA — Thirty nine out of 135 border villages in Nagaland lack mobile network connectivity, according to Minister of State for Communication and Rural Development, Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar's update in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
The minister informed that out of 5200 villages and habitations in the border areas of Northeast region, 4696 villages and habitations are covered with mobile connectivity.
Sekhar also updated that during the last five years (FY 2020-21 to FY 2024-25), INR 1775.53 crore have been allocated or disbursed under various schemes of Digital Bharat Nidhi for strengthening mobile network in remote areas of North Eastern Region.

He stated that the mobile coverage for any uncovered inhabited villages is provided by the Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) based on the techno-commercial viability.
The government, through funding from Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN), is implementing various schemes for expansion of telecom connectivity through installation of mobile towers in the rural, remote and border areas of the country.
He also informed that as of June 2025, 11 sites have been commissioned in Sikkim under DBN funded mobile schemes, providing mobile coverage to 13 villages, including border area.
